Chris Succo GERMAN, b. 1979

Overview

Chris Succo’s cool, gestural abstractions range from paintings of lacquered aluminum and oil on canvas to sculptures made of steel, mesh, or boxing equipment. A number of conceptual and aesthetic concerns unite Succo’s disparate styles; as he repeats various modes of making across canvases, he attempts to find individual expressions while building larger story lines from one piece to the next. Succo is also interested in the constraints of minimalist, black-and-white palettes. In his series of “White Paintings,” for example, the artist partially obscures colorful painted backgrounds with gestural layers of white oil paint. His “ZigZag Paintings,” on the other hand, evoke elements of calligraphy. Succo has exhibited in New York, London, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Paris. His works belong in the collections of the Museum Kunstpalast and the Sammlung der Stadt Neuss.
